  3. These are programs to test the interleave factor for your harddisk.
  4. They are by Steve Gibson who will be selling a program which will
  5. do this same job and then determine the optimum interleave
  6. factor and then DO IT all without losing any data.
  7. The program will be available for $29 in 45 to 60 days ie.

  14. These programs are alluded to in his Info World column and explained
  15. more fully in the literature which accompanied the source code
  16. listings for these programs.  I typed the source code in but
  17. I am not about to retype the whole doc and I do not have an
  18. OCR.  SO....

  20. First run SPINTIME.COM.  It should run EXACTLY 60 sec and say
  21. your HD is spinning at about 3600 RPM.  If not the next program
  22. will not tell you the truth.

  24. Next run SPINTEST.COM  It will tell the # of times the disk
  25. has to spin to read a full track.  17 is about as bad as a
  26. normal HD can get and and RLL can get as bad as 26.  3 is
  27. about as good as you can get!  (My turbo clone does 17
  28. at 4.77 mHz but 3 at 6.77 mHz which explains why it works great
  29. under normal use but FASTBACK thinks DOS performance is HORRID)

  31. The .BAS programs are only used to create the .COM files.  But
  32. I typed them so you can DL them!!

  37. Better yet run these programs and if your system is not at
  38. optimal performance - and most are not - then send in an order
  39. for the program.  OR you can back-up and patch boot sectors
  40. and try until you hit upon the right interleave.  Me - I'm
  41. sending in the money - Steve's stuff really works great.

  44. credit for this poor typing, grammar and whatever else anyone
  45. could fine to complain about.  There are not spelling errors
  46. in the doc - only typos!!  HA HA.
