- These are programs to test the interleave factor for your harddisk.
- They are by Steve Gibson who will be selling a program which will
- do this same job and then determine the optimum interleave
- factor and then DO IT all without losing any data.
- The program will be available for $29 in 45 to 60 days ie.
- late May Early June from:
-
- Gibson Research Corp.
- Box 6024
- Irvine, CA 92716
-
- These programs are alluded to in his Info World column and explained
- more fully in the literature which accompanied the source code
- listings for these programs. I typed the source code in but
- I am not about to retype the whole doc and I do not have an
- OCR. SO....
-
- First run SPINTIME.COM. It should run EXACTLY 60 sec and say
- your HD is spinning at about 3600 RPM. If not the next program
- will not tell you the truth.
-
- Next run SPINTEST.COM It will tell the # of times the disk
- has to spin to read a full track. 17 is about as bad as a
- normal HD can get and and RLL can get as bad as 26. 3 is
- about as good as you can get! (My turbo clone does 17
- at 4.77 mHz but 3 at 6.77 mHz which explains why it works great
- under normal use but FASTBACK thinks DOS performance is HORRID)
-
- The .BAS programs are only used to create the .COM files. But
- I typed them so you can DL them!!
-
- If you wish the FULL DOCS write to Steve Gibson at the above
- address and it will be sent FREE.
-
- Better yet run these programs and if your system is not at
- optimal performance - and most are not - then send in an order
- for the program. OR you can back-up and patch boot sectors
- and try until you hit upon the right interleave. Me - I'm
- sending in the money - Steve's stuff really works great.
-
- Who am I? --- You don't know me and I am not about to take
- credit for this poor typing, grammar and whatever else anyone
- could fine to complain about. There are not spelling errors
- in the doc - only typos!! HA HA.
